Breaking flag news.
0:01
Breaking flag news!
0:02
Minnesota is redesigning her flag.
0:04
The current colors provocatively called,
0:06
quote, “worst in the union,”
0:08
by some YouTuber,
0:09
Minnesota asked for submissions,
0:11
received thousands,
0:11
out of which selected six,
0:13
then thinned to three.
0:14
One of which,
0:15
to be picked as new before end of the year.
0:17
Which of the three will it be?
0:19
Doubtless many Minnesotans
0:20
[and YouTubers]
0:21
will want to weigh in,
0:22
and I will,
0:23
because breaking flag news is rare and exciting.
0:27
So exciting that this is my SECOND
0:29
Minnesota flag redesign video.
0:30
The first with my first impressions of the
0:33
six semifinalists
0:34
I gave semiserious names.
0:35
I'm sticking with for cinematic continuity.
0:37
But enough with the intro.
0:38
Onto the top trio,
0:40
with designs, as described by their documents,
0:42
for you to decide upon.
0:43
First up, Star Rise.
0:45
So Minnesota is the North Star state.
0:47
Thanks to the angle inlet that
0:50
US/Canadian map making muddied up
0:51
that inched Minnesota out over the 49th parallel,
0:54
putting her as America's northernmost contiguous state.
0:57
Thus Star Rise centers the North Star
0:59
here, with eight points,
1:00
to distinguish it from the standard state stars.
1:03
The blue is the sky that gives colors to
1:05
Minnesota's 10,000 lakes,
1:06
with a rolling green landscape
1:08
for the forests and farms,
1:09
and a bit of snow up top because,
1:11
it's cold up top.
1:12
That's Star Rise.
1:13
Onto Old Wavy.
1:14
Here again is a North Star,
1:16
this time distinct as four points in yellow.
1:18
And on the upper fly is described as,
1:21
wisps of snow, clouds, and aurora,
1:23
that are reflected along
1:24
the bottom half as the head of the Mississippi River.
1:27
You might see a loon,
1:28
the common loon is the state bird,
1:29
you might not, but it's there.
1:31
And that's Old Wavy.
1:32
Last up Polaris Tricolor.
1:34
Starting with a hoist design in the
1:35
simplified shape of Minnesota herself.
1:38
An eight pointed star is centered
1:39
inside with more of a twinkle look.
1:41
And from that feature,
1:42
tricolors extend for the lake's land and snow.
1:45
These are the final three.
1:47
And if you haven't ranked them yourself already,
1:49
pause here to give it a ponder 'cause I've got thoughts,
1:52
I'm about to share in 3...2...1.
1:56
All right.
1:56
Old Wavy.
1:58
Of the top three.
1:59
It's easily the awfulest.
2:01
In my first impressions video,
2:03
did not like this design,
2:04
and given time to reflect upon it has
2:07
but changed my position to
2:09
do not like, harder.
2:11
And learning the details of the design didn't help either.
2:13
Snow, clouds, and the aurora borealis
2:16
are very different things and
2:19
this squiggle looks like none of them.
2:21
It's reflection I can see as a river
2:24
if I try and it may be inspired by the loon.
2:28
But to me, it looks like a duck.
2:30
And a duck-side-down-duck.
2:31
In fact, I think this design really represents
2:34
the potential danger in flag redesigns.
2:36
Maybe it can serve as warning to any
2:39
states who might want to go next.
2:41
Because when you ask for designs of a state,
2:43
you'll get designs that
2:44
stick all the stuff of the state on the flag,
2:47
like the loon and
2:48
the Mississippi and
2:50
the, ah, aurora?
2:51
But the goal of a flag is not to use pre-existing symbols,
2:55
but to become a symbol
2:57
of its city, or state, or state state.
3:00
And all that stuff?
3:01
Well, there's a perfect place for it in,
3:03
Your Seal.
3:04
Which we don't have time to get into.
3:05
But Minnesota also just redesigned hers into
3:08
a total banger!
3:09
Best seal in the Union?
3:11
Uhh, I don't actually know
3:12
because I haven't gone through all of them.
3:14
Oh, they're so interesting.
3:16
No, Grey.
3:17
Don't get distracted.
3:17
There's no time.
3:19
You have yet to give your hottest of takes,
3:21
which, before I say the sentence that will doubtless
3:24
drive many mad.
3:25
This video had to be written,
3:26
recorded,
3:27
edited,
3:27
animated
3:27
and edited again,
3:28
all in a day.
3:29
So I did.
3:30
And reserve the right to retract.
3:32
But, I actually think I might prefer
3:35
Minnesota's original flag over Old Wavy.
3:39
[ugh] I know.
3:40
It's terrible.
3:42
Literally worst in the union,
3:44
but there's kind of an achievement in that.
3:46
At least it's outstanding.
3:48
Aren't the real worst things those in the middle of bad,
3:52
where there isn't even any fun to be had
3:55
in the art of entertaining complaining.
3:57
That's Old Wavy.
3:59
Bad but middle mediocre,
4:01
which is worse than being the worst.
4:04
Ah, yeah. So anyway, in case you couldn't tell,
4:06
I really don't like this design,
4:08
and its alternative options are even uglier.
4:12
So let's just move on to,
4:13
Star Rise.
4:15
Which is...fine?
4:16
Uh, I don't have a lot to say about this one
4:18
because it's better,
4:20
but maybe not amazing.
4:21
If Old Wavy is mediocre bad,
4:23
then this one is mediocre good.
4:25
Now, that's a bit too harsh.
4:27
Really my main complaint is that it's so good at evoking
4:30
the idea of a landscape that it looks kind of
4:33
odd when hung vertical.
4:34
North Star to side star?
4:36
There are alternative options that move the star but still.
4:40
But I'd rate any of these as a legit improvement over the original flag
4:44
and would probably put Minnesota somewhere in the region of
4:47
Miss Mississippi's recent redesign.
4:50
Yeah, I don't know?
4:51
But better for sure.
4:52
Now on to,
4:53
Polaris Tricolor.
4:54
Which, come on girl, contest over, right?
4:58
It's awesome.
5:00
That Minnesota K is so kool,
5:02
subtly representing the Great State.
5:05
It's a unique design element,
5:06
not just among state flags but world flags.
5:09
I kind of can't believe no tricolor hoist
5:12
has inverted a triangle before because
5:14
it looks so truly traditional.
5:16
Something that could have been designed
5:17
at any time in the long past.
5:19
Thus basically guaranteeing it'll look great into the long future,
5:23
unlike say Old Wavy,
5:25
which despite my nickname,
5:26
looks painfully modern,
5:28
and is destined to be dated in under a decade.
5:30
Polaris Tricolor looks like a flag.
5:33
Especially when you rotate it with
5:34
North Star, top star,
5:35
and still stands out even without wind.
5:38
Now, the only thing I'm afraid of for perfect Polaris is
5:42
there are a bunch of variants,
5:44
all of which detract
5:46
from the original design.
5:48
Look, I get the desire to tinker at the last second.
5:51
When this first caught my eye,
5:52
I did wonder about the slightly muted colors
5:55
and had second thoughts
5:57
about the white stripe up top.
5:58
But unlike Old Wavy,
6:00
my love, for this design has only grown with time.
6:04
White stripe on top makes it distinct
6:06
from some of the most well known tricolors.
6:08
And the slightly muted colors convey a
6:11
northern kind of cold coziness and
6:13
look better together than brightening the blue.
6:16
I mean, look, the design is so strong,
6:18
it would survive small changes,
6:20
but they'd hurt my heart a bit.
6:22
Thus, the original Tricolor Polaris design,
6:25
as the artist intended,
6:27
gets my unambiguous approval
6:30
and I hope to soon see it flying over the
6:32
Land of 10,000 Lakes.
6:34
But, I'm not a Minnesotan.
6:36
It's not my opinion that matters.
6:37
I'm just here because I can't stop myself from
6:40
being on the edge of my seat to see what
6:42
Minnesota selects for herself.
6:45
Please pick Polaris Tricolor though.
