0:00- Did you know there are forbidden colors?
0:02(bright upbeat music) I've got a challenge for you.
0:03Here's a blue crayon and a green crayon.
0:06Now imagine the color between these two,
0:08blue-green, like this.
0:10That was pretty easy, right?
0:11Now I want you to picture a crayon
0:12that's the mix of these two, red and green.
0:15I'm not talking about brown or something,
0:18I want you to imagine
0:19what an actual mix of those two colors would look like.
0:22It's pretty hard, isn't it?
0:23Probably impossible, actually. And it's not your fault.
0:27It's biologically forbidden.
0:28We sense color with receptors called cone cells in our eyes
0:31that are sensitive to these wavelengths.
0:33But those cones don't send a red signal
0:35or a green signal to your brain,
0:37they don't know what color of light is hitting them,
0:39they only know how much light is hitting them
0:41that they're sensitive to, and how excited they are.
0:43But your visual system does a cool trick.
0:45It basically subtracts the green signal from the red signal.
0:49If that's a big positive value,
0:51it means you're seeing more red light.
0:52If it's negative, you're seeing more green light.
0:54But it also means you can't see equal red and green
0:57at the same time.
0:58Red and green mixed is an impossible color.
1:01We're just not wired for it.
1:02Try it for yourself.
1:03Pause this and stare at these squares cross-eyed,
1:06and tell me what you see where the colors overlap.
1:09For me, my brain just keeps flipping back and forth
1:12between green and red, it's so weird.
1:14There are also colors you can experience
1:16that don't exist in the real world at all.
1:19Look at this green square for several seconds.
1:22Don't take your eye off of it.
1:24Don't swipe away to another video.
1:26Just relax and stare. Pause if you need to.
1:30Okay, now look at a white background.
1:33You should see a red
1:34that's more vivid than any red that exists in nature.
1:37It's called super luminous red.
1:39It happens because the green cone cells in your eyes
1:41get exhausted and that mega red signal takes over.
1:45These kind of impossible colors
1:47are called chimerical colors.
1:49And there are even imaginary colors.
1:51If we could somehow just stimulate, say, these cones,
1:54your brain would perceive a green that's brighter
1:56and greener than any green possible in nature.
1:59But this is impossible
2:01because our cone sensitivities overlap.
2:03We can't just stimulate one type.
2:05Except scientists just did that.
2:07They used micro lasers to target just one type of cone cell,
2:11and people actually saw that hyper green.
2:13The scientists named this color olo.
2:16But unless your crayons start shooting lasers at you,
2:18you probably won't see that anytime soon.
2:21Follow me for more cool science videos.
