- Did you know there are forbidden colors?
0:02
(bright upbeat music) I've got a challenge for you.
0:03
Here's a blue crayon and a green crayon.
0:06
Now imagine the color between these two,
0:08
blue-green, like this.
0:10
That was pretty easy, right?
0:11
Now I want you to picture a crayon
0:12
that's the mix of these two, red and green.
0:15
I'm not talking about brown or something,
0:18
I want you to imagine
0:19
what an actual mix of those two colors would look like.
0:22
It's pretty hard, isn't it?
0:23
Probably impossible, actually. And it's not your fault.
0:27
It's biologically forbidden.
0:28
We sense color with receptors called cone cells in our eyes
0:31
that are sensitive to these wavelengths.
0:33
But those cones don't send a red signal
0:35
or a green signal to your brain,
0:37
they don't know what color of light is hitting them,
0:39
they only know how much light is hitting them
0:41
that they're sensitive to, and how excited they are.
0:43
But your visual system does a cool trick.
0:45
It basically subtracts the green signal from the red signal.
0:49
If that's a big positive value,
0:51
it means you're seeing more red light.
0:52
If it's negative, you're seeing more green light.
0:54
But it also means you can't see equal red and green
0:57
at the same time.
0:58
Red and green mixed is an impossible color.
1:01
We're just not wired for it.
1:02
Try it for yourself.
1:03
Pause this and stare at these squares cross-eyed,
1:06
and tell me what you see where the colors overlap.
1:09
For me, my brain just keeps flipping back and forth
1:12
between green and red, it's so weird.
1:14
There are also colors you can experience
1:16
that don't exist in the real world at all.
1:19
Look at this green square for several seconds.
1:22
Don't take your eye off of it.
1:24
Don't swipe away to another video.
1:26
Just relax and stare. Pause if you need to.
1:30
Okay, now look at a white background.
1:33
You should see a red
1:34
that's more vivid than any red that exists in nature.
1:37
It's called super luminous red.
1:39
It happens because the green cone cells in your eyes
1:41
get exhausted and that mega red signal takes over.
1:45
These kind of impossible colors
1:47
are called chimerical colors.
1:49
And there are even imaginary colors.
1:51
If we could somehow just stimulate, say, these cones,
1:54
your brain would perceive a green that's brighter
1:56
and greener than any green possible in nature.
1:59
But this is impossible
2:01
because our cone sensitivities overlap.
2:03
We can't just stimulate one type.
2:05
Except scientists just did that.
2:07
They used micro lasers to target just one type of cone cell,
2:11
and people actually saw that hyper green.
2:13
The scientists named this color olo.
2:16
But unless your crayons start shooting lasers at you,
2:18
you probably won't see that anytime soon.
